The Way of Ayurveda…

The Ayurvedic lifestyle has positively impacted my life for the past 20+ years. Embracing its philosophy and practice continually supports my quest for optimum health and homeostasis. I’d like to share with you some basics from my Ayurvedic certification. New information can be great motivation when we are actively embarking on a journey of improved health, balance, and vitality.

Here are some places to begin as you explore Ayurveda. Enjoy!

What is Ayurveda?

-Ayurveda has the potential to cure many diseases in a useful manner. It is an ancient system of medicine dating more than 5,000 years old. The main intention of Ayurveda is to cleanse the body and to restore the balance of mind, body, and spirit.

-The word Ayurveda is formed of two Sanskrit words:

‘Ayur’(life) + ‘veda’(science) = Ayurveda (Science of Life)

-Ayurveda aims to protect the health of a healthy person and completely eradicate disease and dysfunction in the body.

-Maintenance of health is encouraged by Ayurveda with the implementation of a correct diet, lifestyle, and use of herbs.

AYURVEDIC PANTRY ESSENTIALS

Stock your pantry with these vital provisions to support immuno boosting Ayurvedic practices:

For example:

Coconut oil or Sesame Oil for “oil pulling”

Beginners Oil Pull (Gandusha) **Do this first thing in the morning.

1. Hold one tablespoon oil in mouth for 2-3 minutes then spit out *DO NOT SWALLOW OIL*

2. Rinse mouth with warm salt water.

3. Brush and floss teeth as normal.

4. SMILE!

Some benefits of doing an oil pull:

  • Detoxification

  • Improves oral health

  • Prevents dryness of throat

  • Kills harmful bacteria, strenghtens teeth, gums, and jaw

  • Has a whitening effect and can remove stains

  • May reduce headaches

Oil pulling is simple to do and you only need one ingredient! I use coconut oil because of its wonderful antimicrobial properties. The goal is to gently swish and hold oil in mouth for 15-20 minutes. Remember to read and do the research, inform yourself, don’t swallow the oil, avoid if allergic, then see what works best for you.

Some of my favorite Ayurvedic healing, power ingredients:

Fennel seed, coriander, lemon juice, fresh ginger root, ground ginger root(powder), salt, black pepper, cumin, turmeric, basil leaves, cloves, cardamom, gooseberry, cinnamon…

To protect and soothe the throat:

Gargle 2-3 times a day using warm water, a pinch of salt and turmeric.

When coming in from outside:

Gargle 2 times a day with one teaspoon of ginger, a pinch of salt added to warm water.

Stock your pantry the Ayurvedic way, and let the healing begin!

What’s your Dosha?

Seeking literature and research about the three doshas can shed some light on why we feel the way we do. Doshas are the energetic principles that govern the way our physiological and psychological body functions. The three dosha types are: Vata, Pitta, Kapha.

You can complete a Prakriti Analysis to discover where your constitution falls. Then use the results to study and examine ways to nurture your body and promote balance. Implementing some Ayurvedic practices that work for you may improve the physical body and enhance mind, body, and spirit connection! Augment recipes with food choices and ingredients that may support your dosha helping to correct any imbalances and prevent dis-ease in the body.
